Copenhagen is one of the few cities in the world which can boast to have harbors clean enough to swim in, thanks to both water quality and a beautiful accessible waterfront. When in Copenhagen (and Denmark) you are never far from the sea and there are several beaches, recreational areas and wooden piers to choose from for swimming all year round.

Copenhagen offers clean beaches, harbor baths and bathing zones free of use. The largest beaches are Svanemøllen beach in the northern part of town, and Amager beach in the south. While Amager beach park offers 4 kilometers of white sand beach, Islands Brygge harbor bath has five sea basins centrally located in the harbor. Harbor baths are also located next to Fisketorvet shopping mall and at Sluseholmen.

It is possible to go for a swim throughout the whole harbor, find your favorite spot and take a dip close to one of the many orange ladders. Be careful with boat traffic and occasional stinging jellyfish, most common in late summer. Never swim across the harbor to the other side of the canal, stay close to the waterfront.

The statue was ordered by Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg, after his visit to the ballet about fairytale story The Little Mermaid. It was made by sculptor Edvard Eriksen and unveiled at it’s current location in 1913. Jacobsen was a passionate art collector, in particularly of sculpture, and he donated his personal collection of works that founded Glyptoteket art museum.

To get the full Copenhagen experience, one should get out on the bike lanes and bike among locals. It is also the best way of transportation since the city is completely flat and there are bike lanes on pretty much every road. Bikes can be rented at hostels, bike-shops or one of the self-service bike-sharing systems such as Bycyklen or Donkey Republic.

Nyhavn is one of Copenhagen’s top attractions for tourists and the pedestrian street along the canal is packed with people most of the year. For this reason, most Copenhageners stay away during the summer season or all year round. But on a sunny spring or fall day, it is nice to sit in one of the sidewalk cafes and watch by-passers, or stroll along over 300-year-old houses behind the colourful facades. Nyhavn’s oldest house is Nyhavn 9, built in 1681 and the area bear a lot of history from Copenhagen in the old days.

Nyhavn is a lively neighbourhood with restaurants and bars. The harbor district is worth exploring -most tourists stay along the main street, but rarely find their way into the side streets. Walking into the side streets you will find cosy shops, the Danish Design Museum, Amalienborg Palace and Ofelia Beach.

Sauna culture is growing in Copenhagen. There are several public baths, SPAs and mobile saunas with saunagus, and many Copenhageners enjoy taking a dip in the city harbor all year round.

Saunagus (Aufguss in German) is an aromatherapy ritual in the sauna, where a Gusmester (‘steam master’) pours water with essential oils on the hot sauna stones. It creates hot steam, which the Gusmester distributes through the room by swinging a towel. It is an intense experience, varying in style depending on the Gusmester. There is often music and you enjoy the ritual in silence. The essential oils provide a scent and atmosphere to the room with varying effects of well-being, relaxation and tranquility.

Saunagus usually lasts an hour and consists of 3 sessions of 10-15 minutes duration. During the breaks you shower in cold water or jump into the sea.

The health benefits of sauna and winter bathing is a fact to many Scandinavians. Saunagus is not only a nice relaxing experience -a weekly gus during the cold and dark months of the year can also keep the winter blues away.

See my guide to Copenhagen’s best saunas with saunagus here.

Sjællandsgade bad i København tilbyder flere ugentlige saunagus

It’s Magnolia season, and the best spot for watching the pink and white flowers bloom is the Horticultural Gardens (Landbohøjskolens have) in Frederiksberg. The Magnolia trees in Copenhagen bloom between April-May, typically before other trees leaf out.

In front of the National Gallery of Denmark, two magnificent Magnolia trees frame the entrance of the historicist building. The huge trees with its white flowers reaching above the museum roof is an impressive sight.

Beautiful Magnolia trees can also be found in The Botanical Gardens in central Copenhagen and in Assistens Cemetery.
