CISTERNERNE – UNDERGROUND ART SPACE

The Cisterns is Copenhagen’s old water reservoir, which today serves as an underground exhibition space for contemporary art. It is one of Copenhagen’s most atmospheric venues, and with its experimental exhibitions and raw architecture, the Cisterns is a must-see.

The exhibitions are based on the special architecture of the place, natural light and climate, and therefore the museum is closed during winter. The next exhibition opens March 15, 2020 with Tomás Saracenos ‘Event Horizon’.

GLYPTOTEKET ART MUSEUM

Glyptoteket houses a collection of sculptures, antique art and even mummies, exhibited in the most beautiful architectural settings. The museum is worth a visit just for its impressive interior itself with marble floors, pillars, winter garden and roof terrace.

The art collection is world class and it is atmospheric to walk among the marble sculptures in the great halls and through the Egypt exhibition with hieroglyphs and mummies in mysterious rooms with dim lighting. Take a break in the stunning winter garden café that forms the heart of the building. In summer season the museum’s roof terrace is a lovely space to hang out, offering one of Copenhagen’s best views.

On Tuesdays admission to the museum is free, except for special exhibitions and the roof terrace.

The Glyptotek is located next to Tivoli and the central station. The exhibitions consist of more than 10,000 works of art – mainly from ancient Mediterranean cultures as well as Danish and French sculpture and painting from the 19th century. It was industrial magnate Carl Jacobsen who, with the earnings from his brewery (Carlsberg), created the fantastic collection of art that he donated to the public in 1888, and founded Glyptoteket. The brewer donated a lot of art to Copenhagen, with The Little Mermaid as the most famous piece.

GUIDE – CHRISTMAS MARKETS COPENHAGEN 2019

Best place for gift shopping in Copenhagen is one of the many Christmas markets. I have listed my favorite markets for this year below.

If you don’t have time to visit one of the markets but want to find a special gift, search beyond the overcrowded main shopping streets in the city center. In Nørrebro you find a wide selection of stores with unique and sustainable products on Jægersborggade and in the area of Elmegade- Guldbergsgade. Vesterbro’s coziest street Værnedamsvej offers a few beautiful shops and lovely atmosphere. Visit Torvehallerne for fresh delicacies and flowers.

POPUP SAUNA – SOLAR EGG

Art meets sauna in the ’Solar egg’ exhibition. Until 13 January 2019 you can visit the sauna sculpture, located in the courtyard of Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Pass by the five meter tall golden mirror egg to take a photo, or enjoy 30 minutes inside the sauna. Wednesday evenings are free, but make sure to book a spot in advance.

The interior is as nice as the exterior, with a heart shaped stove made of iron and stone. Due to the high construction of the sauna, it never gets very warm inside. It is a fun experience though, as you get to be part of the art piece.

In the courtyard there is also a trailer for changing clothes with showers, and lockers for your personal belongings. It is possible to rent towels, slippers and a kimono upon arrival.

Kunst møder sauna i udstillingen ‘Solar egg’.
